PHILOSOPHY & STYLE: Dr. Miller conceptualizes patients' struggles from an existential perspective, which fully appreciates the role of our fundamental drives and those traits that are common across the human psyche and human experience. As such, Dr. Miller's clinical "techniques" are integrative. He integrates psychological theory with continental philosophy, theology, modern history, economic theory, anthropology, and the fine arts, as well as tenets of contemporary Japanese culture. Moreover, his engagement with patients emphasizes the hallmark (and cornerstone) of psychological health: authenticity.

Psychotherapy is, at its core, a profound exploration of the fundamental conditions of human existence: the confrontation with suffering, death, freedom, isolation, and meaning. The goal is to help individuals come to terms with the inherent uncertainty and chaos of life. certain inescapable realities - life is finite, pain is inevitable, and the meaning of existence can be elusive. As a psychotherapist, Dr. Miller guides patients to face these realities head-on, to confront the deep anxiety that arises from recognizing the weight of their freedom and the responsibility to create their own meaning in a universe that doesn't hand it to them on a silver platter.

However, it's not just about accepting the darkness; it's about transcending it. The goal isn't to comfort you by saying life will get easier or that all suffering can be avoided - because it can't. Instead, it's to empower you to develop the strength of character to bear that suffering, to take on the challenge of existence with courage and integrity. The existential approach emphasizes personal responsibility: you are responsible for making your life meaningful, for imbuing it with purpose through your actions, through your ability to stand up straight in the face of adversity and say, "I will live according to my highest values, no matter how hard it gets." In this way, existential therapy pushes individuals toward authenticity, a way of being where you align your actions with your deepest beliefs, no matter the cost.
